Claudette Colbert (September 13, 1903 – July 30, 1996) was a French-born American Academy Award-winning actress of film and theater. Born in Saint-Mandé, France and raised in New York City, Colbert began her career in Broadway productions during the 1920s, progressing to film with the advent of talking pictures. She joined Paramount Pictures, and was noted for performances in screwball comedies as well as dramatic roles, receiving Academy Award nominations in both film genres. From the mid 1930s until the late 1940s, Colbert was one of the highest paid performers in American cinema.
